Educator

Despite being a fully-fledged artist in his own right, Manjeet has been active as an educator of music, both privately and professionally, for over 20 years. Through his abundance of experience (having begun his teaching career unofficially at 18 years of age), Manjeet has been able to not only evoke a newfound love and respect for tabla within the Indian community, but has succeeded in achieving the same within audiences of varied cultural backgrounds.

He has participated in a number of government projects to teach not only children, but also undergraduates/postgraduates and the general public about the intricacies of Indian rhythms and music. His manner of incorporating a mixture of lectures, videos, narratives, audience participation and so on distinguishes Manjeet’s teaching style as thoroughly unique. As a result, Manjeet has been highly in demand to contribute to educative programmes concerning world music and percussion. He has held the title of the Education and Outreach Coordinator for Southampton City Council, leading workshops and creating multimedia content (CDs) to encourage children’s interest in music. In addition, Manjeet was a part of the Luton Music Service for just under a decade and following that, Tower Hamlets Music Service for 5 years as a peripatetic teacher. From 2011 to the present. Furthermore, Manjeet has also acted as an adjudicator for official tabla grading examinations in London.

Manjeet has also been a guest lecturer at several educational institutes around the UK; from the Birmingham Conservatoire to the City Literary Institute in Holborn, several establishments have and continue to invite Manjeet to skilfully lead seminars, discussions and demonstrations appreciating the versatility and beauty of Indian music. At the heart of Manjeet’s teaching philosophy lies: the importance of group discussions; an understanding of the nuances of one’s instrument; a positive but challenging atmosphere; and most of all, the student’s enjoyment.
